WNY Meditators and the Climate Justice Rally in Buffalo, September 24, 2015

“Now is the time for us to tap the power available to us from our diverse disciplines, cultures and societies to cultivate the dignity, confidence and fearlessness necessary to protect our Earth. By doing so, we can help to reconnect all humanity with its primordial basic goodness, transform our relationship to the sacred world and be inspired to sane choices, compassionate leadership and wise activism.”

~A Call to Contemplation and Action on Climate Change by Sakyong Mipham, April 2009

“A true ecological approach always becomes a social approach;
it must integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment,
so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.”

~Laudato Si’ On Care for Our Common Home – Papal Encyclical (Pope Francis), May  2015

Pope Francis

On Thursday September 24, 2015, between 4:00 and 6:00 pm, there will be a rally in Buffalo’s Niagara Square. The rally coincides with Pope Francis’ speech before the U.S. Congress, earlier in the day, and the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference to be held in Paris in November and December.

Pope Francis’s encyclical, released in May, states that the issue of climate change is not an abstract, scientific problem to be solved but is an issue of justice and fairness for all at national and local levels. It is about human health, clean air and drinking water, healthy food, economic fairness, energy conservation, transportation, cultural preservation and more. It is about protecting the earth and all its inhabitants- humans, animals and other life forms. And it is about doing this in a way that recognizes that those least responsible are most adversely affect by climate change. These guiding principles are in agreement with the teachings of Buddhism, including Shambhala.

We encourage everyone in the WNY meditation and Buddhist community who are moved by the issue of climate change, caring for our planet and climate justice to attend the rally on September 24th in Niagara Square. to see a strong turnout, representative of the people of WNY- including the many meditation groups, at the rally on September 24th. The rally in Niagara Square is hosted by the Sierra Club, Niagara Chapter. To learn more, visit their website at www.NiagaraSierraClub.com
